How to Set Up Task Dependencies

Task dependencies let you link tasks in the same project so Taskip can tell you when one is waiting on another — and, if you turn on auto-shift planning, keep their dates in sync automatically.

Dependency Types

When you link two tasks, you choose how they relate:

  • Finish to start — the second task can't finish until the first one is done. This is the most common type.
  • Start to start — the two tasks are meant to start together.
  • Finish to finish — the two tasks are meant to wrap up together.

You can also add an optional lag (days) — extra time to leave between the two tasks beyond the relationship itself.

Where to Manage Dependencies

  1. Open a task's detail view.
  2. Go to the Dependencies section.

You'll see two lists:

  • Blocked by — tasks this one depends on (its predecessors).
  • Blocks — tasks that depend on this one (its dependents).

Adding a Dependency

  1. In the Dependencies section, click Add dependency.
  2. Search for and select the task this one depends on.
  3. Choose the relationship type (Finish to start / Start to start / Finish to finish).
  4. Optionally set a lag in days.
  5. Click Add dependency to save.

Dependencies can only be made between tasks in the same project, and Taskip won't let you create a loop — if a link would create a cycle (for example, A depends on B, and you try to make B depend on A), the request is refused with an error.

What "Blocked" Means

A task is marked Blocked when a predecessor hasn't reached the stage the relationship requires:

  • A Finish to start predecessor that isn't yet in a Done-category stage.
  • A Start to start predecessor that's still in Backlog or To Do.
  • A Finish to finish predecessor that isn't Done while this task already is.

Blocked status is computed live from your board — you never set it by hand.

Finding Blocked Work

  • A Blocked badge appears on task cards and rows across the board and list views.
  • Use the Blocked filter on the board to show only blocked tasks.

Removing a Dependency

Open the task's Dependencies section and remove the link from either the Blocked by or Blocks list. Removing a dependency doesn't change either task's dates.
